Why a Home Practice?

You may be wondering why do you need to practice at home? After all, you attend class once or twice a week, maybe more, and for goodness sakes whose got the time? I know, I hear you, heck I'm saying the same thing to myself............Are you kidding me? I've got kids to get ready for school (okay so I only have one now and let's face it at 15 he can pretty much get himself ready), but I do have to drive him to school, teach a class or two, take care of my wonderful massage clients, do a little transcription, pick him back up from school, get him to class, etc., etc. There's a lot to do in a day, and even though you're schedule may not look exactly like mine, my guess is you have a lot to do as well. How and when are you going to fit in a yoga practice, and again, why?

Stay with me here, I'll try to keep it short - after all we've got a lot to do!

What brought you to yoga in the first place? Maybe it was the media hype; you know there for a while all the stars were talking about doing yoga and crediting it for their buff bodies. Or perhaps you heard yoga can help with alleviating back pain, sciatica, headaches, relieve stress, etc., etc.

What keeps you coming to yoga class? All of the above?

For me, practicing yoga has given me a real awareness of my body, connecting my mind with my spirit. I feel happy from the inside out, and I like that feeling. I like, okay love, that inner peace.

Do I practice everyday? I have to be honest and say I don't get on my mat everyday. I do try very hard to live my yoga everday - some days are definitely easier than others. I will say that I can tell a big difference in my attitude and mood when I do step on my mat even if it's just a few minutes. I'm in a much better place afterwards. It helps set the day.

Practicing yoga can help teach us to honor ourselves, respect and love ourselves, which in turn will help us to honor, respect, and have tolerance for others and for our environment. Practicing at home, by ourselves without distractions even for a few minutes can teach us all of that of course, but we may also have a chance to find out who were are and what we need.

By practicing daily through class and home, your going to gain that sense of honor and respect. You're going to feel that connectedness to your body and mind, feel that inner peace. You may even find a new best friend, you! Who wouldn't want that?

Is it going always be peace and calm without problems and stress just because you practice yoga? Heavens NO!

However, because you do practice, you'll have built the strength and gained the tools you need to jump any hurdle life throws your way.

Yeah, I love yoga - can you tell?

This is a great post! I'm only on Day 2 of my Home Practice experiment and I have to honestly say that I'm open about what I get out of it. I'm just doing it just to see ya know? Plus I don't want to get rusty. Anything that I do gain from it, whether it's the peace I feel afterward or just physical, I embrace it all. :)

I found your blog from Marilyn's and boy am I glad I stopped in. I have been having some health issues that pretty much put a damper on my home practice. Perfectionist me, if I can't do it all-I'll do nothing. But reading this entry has reminded me of the fulfillment I feel from just a few moments on the mat, a fulfillment that I felt even before I considered myself a yogi. I'm going to get on the mat tomorrow, even if I just sit, focus and breathe. Thanks again.

I understand exactly where you're coming from suffering from that perfection problem myself. I think just sitting, focusing, and breathing is fabulous. Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing.
